2020 was not a great year for cricket fans around the world, as all cricket activities had to be suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak in March. International cricket resumed in July and England hosted the West Indies. The last international series for the Indian cricket team was against New Zealand in February 2020 before facing Australia Down Under in November.
While players had to take a forced break due to COVID in 2020, the year 2021 is set to witness the Indian team in action almost all year round. India has a packed schedule for 2021 with a number of big series and tournaments lined up, including the challenging England tour, the 2021 T20 World Cup and the 2021 Asia Cup.
The Indian Cricket Control Board (BCCI) has yet to release the official schedule for the India team, but according to a report from InsideSport, Virat Kohli & Co. are scheduled to play 16 ODI, 23 T20I and 14 events from January to December 2021, which does not include the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup matches.
A look at Team India’s schedule for 2021:
India vs Australia – January
India’s schedule for 2021 will continue with the ongoing test series against Australia. The four-game series is currently leveled at 1-1 with two more Tests to go. The third round will be played in Sydney from January 7th and the fourth and final game will be played in Brisbane from January 15th.
India tour of England – February to March
After the conclusion of the Australian tour, the Indian team will return home to host England in a full series consisting of four tests, three ODI and five T20I.
IPL 2021 – April to May
The next edition of the Indian Premier League will be played between April and May. The 2020 edition was held in the United Arab Emirates due to the COVID-19 situation in India, but the tournament can be moved to India in 2021 if the situation is under control.
Sri Lanka Indian Tour and Asia Cup (June-July)
India will tour Sri Lanka after the conclusion of the Indian Premier League for a three-match, five-T20I ODI series. India will extend its stay in Sri Lanka to participate in the Asian Cup, where it will defend its title and face arch-rival Pakistan after a long gap of two years.
India’s tour of Zimbabwe (July)
After the Sri Lanka tour, India is scheduled to tour Zimbabwe for a limited series. The tour was scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to COVID-19. Some young players and new faces could have a chance to prove themselves in the Zimbabwe series.
The India tour of England (August to September)
After hosting England at home, India will travel to the country for a five-match test series in August. The test series will be one of the biggest challenges for the India team in 2021.
South Africa Tour of India (October)
India will then host South Africa in October ahead of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup.
ICC World Cup T20 2021
India will host the 2021 T20 World Cup and start as one of the favorites in the main event.
New Zealand tour of India (November-December)
Team India will then host New Zealand for two tests and three T20Is in November-December.
South Africa Indian Tour (December)
The Indian team will end the year with a tour of South Africa in December where they will play three Tests and as many T20Is.
