2020 US election: Donald Trump falsely claims Georgia won – US presidential election

President Donald Trump kicked off his rally Saturday night in Georgia by Republican Senators Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue recycling the falsehood that the state won.

“You know we won Georgia, so you understand,” Trump told the large crowd gathered for the president’s first post-election rally.

In fact, President-elect Joe Biden won the state of Georgia by about 12,500 votes out of 5 million cast.

Trump said he traveled to Georgia to help “ensure” that the two Republicans win what is likely to be the largest Senate runoff election in US history.

First Lady Melania Trump kicked off the rally by telling Georgians that it is more important than ever to “exercise their rights as citizens and vote.” 4:05 pm

President Donald Trump has unsuccessfully pressured the governor of Georgia to convene a special legislative session aimed at overriding the results of the presidential elections in that state.

Trump made his request to Governor Brian Kemp in a phone call Saturday, and the governor refused. That’s according to a senior government official in Georgia with knowledge of the call who was not authorized to discuss the private conversation and spoke on condition of anonymity.

A person close to the White House who was briefed on the matter verified that account of the call.

Trump’s request was first reported by The Washington Post.

Trump’s obsession with his defeat overshadows his party’s campaign to save his majority in the Senate. The call came hours before Trump appears at a rally in Georgia, where Republicans hope he will devote his energy to imploring his supporters to vote in two second-round elections on January 5.
