WASHINGTON: Democratic leader Joe Biden appeared to be one step away from winning the US presidential election as the last tally of votes from a handful of battlefield states indicated that the chances of reelection of the current Republican president, Donald Trump, are slim for hours.
By late Thursday night, Biden, who won 253 seats to Trump’s 213, appeared to be approaching the magic number of 270 of 538 electoral college votes.
In Georgia, which has 16 votes in the electoral college, Trump’s lead has dropped to 1,902 votes. In Pennsylvania, with 20 votes in the electoral college, Trump’s lead narrowed to 42,142 votes.
With 213 votes in the electoral college, Trump falls far short of the magical 270.
“We continue to feel great about where things are. And we have no doubt that when the count is up, Senator (Kamala) Harris and I will be the winners,” Biden told reporters in Delaware. As the counting process continued going forward, he urged his fellow Americans to remain calm.
“I ask people to remain calm. The process is working. The count is being completed,” said the 77-year-old former vice president of the United States.
In a White House press conferenceTrump said he will go to court against electoral negligence. The Trump Campaign has already filed lawsuits in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Nevada. He has demanded the counting of votes in Wisconsin.
“Donald Trump will go to court to prevent votes from being counted. We have put together the largest electoral protection effort in history to fight back and we need your help, ”Biden tweeted after Trump’s press conference at the White House.
Trump claimed that Democrats are stealing democracy.
“Our goal is to defend the integrity of the election. We will not allow corruption to steal such an important election or in the election and we cannot allow anyone to silence our voters and manufacture results, “Trump told reporters at the White House.
“There is tremendous litigation and this is a case where they are trying to steal an election,” said the 74-year-old president.
Biden dismissed the charges.
“No one is going to take away our democracy. Not now, not never. The United States has gone too far, fought too many battles, and endured too much to allow that to happen, ”he said in another tweet.
According to The New York Times, major news channels ABC, CBS and NBC were cut as Trump’s “false” statements increased.
“Biden’s path becomes clearer as vote counting continues in decisive states,” Washington Post said.
In an editorial, the newspaper said: “There is no evidence of fraud or corruption.”
“What Trump considers dire is something more mundane, although certainly painful for him: he is losing. On election night in some states, he led the partial counts. Then, as the mail-in ballots were counted, his lead was ‘narrowed’, as he put it. The explanation is obvious to everyone except, apparently, the president, ”he said.
The editorial also noted that Trump was so critical of voting by mail before the election that few Republicans voted that way.
“The majority of the ballots cast, therefore, favor Democrat Joe Biden. Now officials are counting the votes, with observers watching, contrary to another Trump lie; with the participation of Republican and Democratic election officials, contrary to another. Trump’s lie; and according to the rules, contrary to another Trump lie, “he said.
