2020 Mahindra Thar has all the comforts to make a big impact on the Indian market and is offered with a host of new technologies.

The second generation Mahindra Thar created quite a stir like no other in recent Indian automotive history at its world premiere on Independence Day in August. Today, the prices of the all-new model have been revealed as it costs between Rs. 9.8 lakh and Rs. 13.75 lakh (ex-showroom). Reservations for the 2020 Mahindra Thar are already underway in Mahindra showrooms present in the country.

The new generation Thar is available in LX, AX and AX (O) finishes. The first unit of the Thar has already been auctioned for Rs. 1.1 million rupees and the proceeds will go to a good cause. The off-roader was on sale for more than ten years, as the original model was priced well through a final edition limited to just 700 units.

The new model is based on a much improved ladder frame chassis and is longer and wider than the previous model with a longer wheelbase that extends 20mm more to 2,450mm. Leaf springs are replaced by independent wishbones on the multi-link front and rear suspension for better ride quality, while the on-the-go low-range transfer case has 2H, 4H and 4L options.

It comes with a mechanical locking differential at the rear as standard and there is also an electronically controlled brake locking differential for better grip in low traction conditions. The 2020 Mahindra Thar has been improved on the safety and technology front for better on and off-road performance as it features the Electronic Stability Program with roll-over mitigation, grade hold control, and grade descent control. .

Electric driveline disconnect helps speed up the transition from 4WD to 2WD. Other improvements make the new Thar have a best-in-class water wading ability of 625mm, increased ground clearance of 226mm, an improved approach angle of 42 degrees, a departure angle of 37 degrees and a break of 27 degrees. The SUV has received an evolutionary update to its design elements.

The old Thar had a factory-installed softtop, while the newer comes in fixed softtop, convertible softtop, and hardtop options. The cabin has undergone comprehensive overhauls and has helped the Thar transition from a basic off-roader to a lifestyle SUV, courtesy of luxury features. The interior is IP54 rated against water and dust with washable footwells and provision for water drainage.

It consists of a height-adjustable driver’s seat, new center console and dash, new multifunctional steering wheel with mounted controls, round air conditioning vents, premium material touches and finishes, new instrument cluster with digital MID, waterproof speakers mounted on the roof, electric windows, cruise control, keyless entry, TPMS, etc. The high-end trims have a touchscreen infotainment system and forward-facing rear seats.

In terms of powertrains, the 2020 Mahindra Thar comes equipped with a new mStallion 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine and a 2.2-liter four-cylinder mHawk diesel engine. The latter is more powerful than the old CRDe engine at 25 hp and 53 Nm, as it develops a maximum power of 130 hp and 300 Nm of maximum torque.

Mahindra Thar convertible and hardtopThe gasoline unit produces 150 PS & 320 Nm. Both are paired with a six-speed MT or a six-speed AT torque converter with 4WD system as standard.
