The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar are poised for another term in Bihar by crossing the 122-seat majority mark. According to the data released by the Election Commission of India, all the NDA partners (BJP, JD (U), Vikassheel Insaan Party and Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) together won 125 seats out of the 243 constituencies of the assembly.
Even when he took over the leadership of the NDA when the first trends emerged, the grand alliance led by Rashtriya Janata Dal finally finished 15 seats behind. The five party alliance of RJD, Congress, Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) won together in 110 constituencies.
Although the grand alliance led by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav will not form the government in the state, his party that recorded victory in 75 electoral districts emerged as the largest party.
Furthermore, even if Nitish Kumar, a leader whose survival skills have often prevailed over his political challenges, will retain his post as Prime Minister of Bihar, his party may not be able to maintain his older brother status, as he won 43 seats in the assembly while BJP won 74 seats. “Don’t underestimate how difficult it was for us. Returning to power for the fourth time is not easy; many other top ministers did not. But Nitish Kumar succeeded despite the media narrative against him, ”said a senior aide to the prime minister.
