The UK’s Vodafone Group Plc won an international arbitration by the Indian government over a retrospective tax claim of Rs 20 billion, media said on Friday.
The Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague ruled that the conduct of India’s Income Tax Department violates ‘fair and equitable’ treatment, CNBC-TV18 and Mint said.
The court ruled that the imposition by the Indian government of a tax liability on Vodafone violates the investment treaty agreement between India and the Netherlands. Reuters reported citing a source.
