20 dead in heavy rains hit Hyderabad and suburbs, 10 die in Andhra


Unprecedented torrential rain that caused havoc in hyderabad and its suburbs in the last 24 hours claimed at least 17 lives and unbalanced normal life.

In other areas of Telangana, three other people were killed in a house collapse incident in Nagarkurnool district. Also in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, heavy rains killed 10 people in different parts of the state.

Up to nine people, including three children, were killed and four others injured in two separate incidents of the wall collapse in Bandlaguda, in Hyderabad’s old city, late on Tuesday.

Deputy Police Commissioner Falaknuma, MA Majeed confirmed to the Hindustan Times that eight people were killed when huge granite slabs of a composite wall and some rocks fell on about 10 houses in the Mohammadia Hills in Bandlaguda around 11pm. One more person died in another incident of a wall collapse in the Phool Bagh colony, in the same town.

“Four people were seriously injured and are undergoing treatment at the Owaisi Hospital,” said the ACP.

GHMC disaster management wing staff with the help of local police and residents pulled the bodies out of the rubble. Several teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were also put into service to help the GHMC remove debris and check for survivors.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi, who visited the Bandlaguda area to oversee rescue operations, tweeted that nine people were killed in the various incidents of the wall collapse.

In the Gagan Pahad area on the Hyderabad-Bengaluru national highway, three members of a family were killed in another incident of a house collapse. In Ibrahimpatnam, on the outskirts of the city, a woman and her 15-year-old daughter died after the roof of their old house collapsed on them.

A doctor was electrocuted to death while attempting to drain the water from his clinic in Banjara Hills on Wednesday morning.

There were reports of two people being washed away by flash floods at Mylardevpally in the Falaknuma area, but there was no confirmation from the police.

In Kummera village of Nagarkurnool district, three people from the same family were killed when the roof of their old house collapsed on them as they slept in the early hours of Wednesday. Two others managed to escape with minor injuries, police said.

Hyderabad, the capital, received unprecedented rains in the past 24 hours. The intensity of the rain increased after 6 p.m. and continued to hit the city throughout the night.

According to a bulletin from the State Disaster Management Authority, the Singapore Township area on the outskirts of the city received the maximum 12 inches of rain in a span of 12 hours until 10 pm. The South Hastinapuram area received 11 inches of rain until 1 a.m. The other areas of the city reported rainfall ranging from 11.5 cm to 20.5 cm.

The water level at Hussain Sagar Lake in the middle of the city crossed the level of the full tank on Tuesday night and began to overflow onto the roads of the city. At 6pm, the water level in Hussain Sagar was recorded at 513.59 meters against the FTL of 513.41 m.

Several low-lying areas in Begum Bazar, Khairatabad, Begumpet, Tolichowki, Shaikpet, Mehdipatnam, Cherlapally, Mallapur, Moula Ali were completely submerged. Rainwater entered several residential apartments in Somajiguda, Errum Manzil, Khairatabad and Vijayanagar Colony.

For rescue and relief measures, GHMC disaster response force teams were put into service to rescue people in the flooded areas of Ameerpet, Nagole, Abids, Mehdipatnam, Forum Mall, Goshamahal, Camp Office of CM, Dilsukhnagar, Miyapur subway station, ECIL, Secunderabad and other places.

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force also jumped into action, rescuing 74 people from the low-lying areas of the Bandangpet area.

In the Chandrayangutta area, an Indian army helicopter was commissioned to transport people from the submerged sites. In various places like the Nadeem colony, the GHMC deployed boats to carry people out of their flooded homes.

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar, who had a phone conversation with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, ordered the authorities to be on high alert for the next two days and ensure that rescue operations are resumed on their feet. of war.

Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Lokesh Kumar asked people not to venture out of their homes unless there was an emergency.

In making a statement in the state legislative council, the minister of municipal administration and urban development, KT Rama Rao, said that up to 40 relief camps were set up in which food and water were provided for almost 80,000 people.

Meanwhile, Telangana Power Transmission Corporation Chairman D Prabhakar Rao said that all measures were being taken to prevent the collapse of the power grid due to the sudden drop in demand. All thermal power plants were withdrawn and only hydraulic power generation was underway, he said.
