Two underage girls died by suicide in Uttar Pradesh in separate incidents on Tuesday, one after she was allegedly gang-raped and the other after alleged sexual harassment.
A 14-year-old Dalit girl from a village in the Chitrakoot district, 237 km from the state capital Lucknow, committed suicide at her home last night. Her family alleges that she was gang-raped by three men in a forest area on October 8 when she had gone to the bathroom. The accused allegedly left her with her hands and legs tied.
“Somehow she crawled near the house. Then we called the police. The police clicked on a photo of her in that condition and untied the ropes. They asked her if she knew the children. She denied it. It was filed after find out who the children are, “the girl’s mother told NDTV.
The girl committed suicide because her complaint was not registered, her family said.
K Satyanarayan, Inspector General of Police, Chitrakoot area, told NDTV that two police officers have been suspended for negligence. One of the accused has been detained while the search for the other is being carried out.
Mr. Satyanarayan and District Magistrate Sheshmani Pandey had met the girl’s family last night.
In the Pratapgarh district of eastern Uttar Pradesh, 165 km from Lucknow, a 17-year-old boy allegedly committed suicide after suffering sexual harassment by three men. The class 11 student jumped into a well, said senior police officer Tanu Upadhyay.
Her mother said that three men in her neighborhood had been harassing her for the past six months. She jumped into the well after the men allegedly entered her home Tuesday and harassed her.
Senior police officer Anurag Arya said cases have been registered against the three men based on statements from the girl’s family. While one person, Guddu, has been arrested, the other two are being searched.
The two incidents come amid national outrage over the alleged gang rape and torture in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras of a 20-year-old Dalit woman, who died in a hospital in Delhi last month.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said cases of violence against women will be tried in fast-track courts and crimes against minors will be tried under the POCSO Act.
“Officials were instructed to provide immediate assistance to the families of the victims. Powerful prosecution procedures will be initiated to punish these crimes. The district administrations of Agra, Chitrakoot and Pratapgarh have been instructed to carry out investigations. fast and effective on recent cases.
