More than 1,000 police officers have been infected with the coronavirus and nine have died in the state that has the highest number of COVID-19 cases in the country with more than 27,000 including 1019 deaths.
State authorities have voiced concern about the force, calling on the center to send an additional 2,000 police officers from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) to provide respite for their own weary officers who have been on the streets since the March 22, three days before the national blockade of COVID-19 began.
“Patrolling and controlling crowds in areas affected by COVID-19 is becoming more dangerous than fighting criminals,” Salunkhe, a Mumbai police officer who agreed to be quoted using his last name, told Reuters news agency. “At least in those cases we can see the enemy.”
Control rooms were set up exclusively to deal with health problems facing the police in Maharashtra, according to the state’s interior minister, Anil Deshmukh.
“The crown pandemic and the resulting blockade have seen the police force stretched out while working in extremely difficult conditions for long hours, both day and night. We don’t want the police to be more overburdened than they are,” Deshmukh said. .
In a sign of solidarity with the police force, several prominent politicians and celebrities have exchanged their social media profile photos for the Maharashtra police logo along with messages of thanks.
