19 FIRs Featured In Hathras Rape Incident Allege Social Media Posts, On-Air Comments ‘Trying To Manipulate Case’

Nineteen different FIRs have been filed in connection with the Hathras rape case. The cases concern posts on social media or comments on television channels, which have been seen as an “attempt to manipulate the incident.” Some even claim that the family is being subjected to pressure leading to contradictory statements.

“There was a criminal conspiracy in the background of the Hathras incident to defame the state government and create social unrest. The family was manipulated into taking a position against the government, after they had a dialogue with the CM. Certain images project to Yogi in bad light were broadcast on a television channel. Some posts on social media were intended to spread caste hatred and incite unrest, “said one FIR.

The 19 FIRs include the main report that was filed by the police in Hathras on Sunday against unidentified persons.

The Hathras Police have filed an FIR against “unknown” persons for allegedly attempting to spark a caste conflict and have invoked serious charges, including sedition.

The event comes amid a perennial controversy over the death of a 19-year-old Dalit woman after she was allegedly ganged up on, and continued protests and visits to her village by political leaders and activists.

The first informative report (FIR) was presented at the Chandpa police station on Sunday afternoon and the names of the accused are unknown, according to police officials. The FIR mentions 19 charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The sections of the IPC include 124A (sedition), 505 (with the intention of causing public alarm and inducing someone to commit a crime against the state or public tranquility), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups).

The police have also invoked section 67 (transmission of obscene material in electronic form) of the TI Law, according to the FIR. The UP government’s statements and the facts related to the Hathras incident are being falsified, manipulated and disseminated through social media. Deceptive content featuring counterfeit media company logos is being shared, a police officer said.
