The number of people infected with the highly contagious COVID-19 increased to 117 today in Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, in Mumbai, with 16 new cases in the past 24 hours. Maharashtra is the most affected state with 3,648 cases.
Mumbai today reported a total of 184 new cases, including Dharavi’s figure.
The BMC civic agency said many of the new patients were already among those kept in isolation. So far, more than 37,000 people have been evaluated by COVID-19 in Dharavi.
Almost a million people live in Dharavi, a 5-square-kilometer slum that has a maze of dirty streets and narrow shacks filled with large families. Ten deaths have been reported from there.
One of the people who was found infected with COVID-109 in the past 24 hours is the niece of a patient who attended an event organized by the Islamic Tablighi Jamaat sect in Nizamuddin, Delhi. The event had become the coronavirus entry point in India when thousands of Jamaat members were positive.
More than 70 percent of Dharavi residents use community toilets. The poor neighborhood has more people than some of the smaller countries. Small industries and workshops for leather goods, ceramics, and textiles operate from the slums spread over 613 acres.
Densely populated areas like Dharavi are a great challenge in efforts to enforce critical social distancing in the control of the coronavirus, which spreads easily from person to person.
A new case of COVID-19 was also reported today from Dadar in Mumbai, with a total of 22.
The number of coronavirus cases in India increased to 14,792, which includes 488 deaths, the Health Ministry said today, adding that 957 new cases and 43 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.
The doubling rate of COVID-19 cases fell to 6.2 days from three days before a nationwide blockade was imposed, the government said on Friday. The decrease is a result of increased testing, including that of patients with SARI (severe acute respiratory illness) and ILI (influenza-like illness), the government added.
