More than 170 people, including several women and children, were admitted with an unknown illness to the Government General Hospital (GGH) in Eluru in the West Godavari district in recent days, according to authorities.
The number of hospitalized patients, which was 55 on Saturday at midnight, rose to 170 on Sunday morning, officials said.
The patients suffered from dizziness, headaches and epilepsy-like symptoms, said a doctor who treated them.
Most of the cases were reported in Kobbari Thota, Kothapeta, Toorpu Veedhi and Arundhati Peta.
Medical teams from different hospitals in West Godavari and Krishna districts were transferred to the colonies, where patients are being treated in special camps.
Samples sent for testing
“Samples of water, food and blood were sent to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) and the reports are awaited. The CT and X-ray reports are normal, ”the doctors said.
Senior Deputy Minister and Health Minister Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas, Collector R. Mutyala Raju, Police Superintendent K. Narayan Naik, Joint Collector Himanshu Shukla and other officials visited the GGH and inquired about the status of the patients.

Some patients were also receiving treatment at various private hospitals, the Joint Collector said.
“Approximately 30 patients were discharged from GGH. There is no need to panic. Patients respond well to treatment and the rate of recovery is good, ”said Mr. Shukla.
