NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways on Thursday he said he has operated 163 Shramik special trains since May 1 and transported home more than 1.60 lakh of migrants stranded in various parts of the country due to coronavirus-induced blockade.
The railways said they operated 56 Shramik special trains on Wednesday and 14 through Thursday, bringing the total to 163.
As of May 7, 50 trains were still on their trips, while 113 had reached their destinations.
“We are planning to run a few more trains at the end of the day,” said a rail spokesman.
Each special train has 24 carriages, each with a capacity of 72 seats. But the national conveyor it is allowing only 54 people on a coach to maintain social distancing standards by not assigning the central berth to any passenger.
While the railroads have not officially stated how much they have spent so far on these services, the cost for which the government says has been shared at an 85:15 ratio with the states, officials indicated that the national carrier has spent around Rs 80 lakh per Service.
From the beginning of services, Gujarat continued to be one of the main origin stations, followed by Kerala.
Among the recipient states, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh the higher states remained.
Previously, the railways were criticized by the opposition parties for charging for these services.
In their guidelines, the railways have said that trains will run only if they have 90 percent occupancy and that “states should collect fare.”
