Sixteen migrant workers, trying to return on foot to their home state, Madhya Pradesh, were killed on Friday when a freight train ran over them between the Jalna and Aurangabad districts, nearly 260 km from here. One was seriously injured, while three escaped.

According to Aurangabad police authorities and railway officials in the Nanded division of the Central South Railway (SCR), 14 died on the spot, while two died from their injuries on the way to the hospital. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Karmad Police Station in Aurangabad.

They were all in their 20s and 30s and came from the Umaria and Shahdol districts. They were working at a steel company in the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) area in the Jalna district.

“At around 5:15 a.m., a freight train ran over some workers on a railway near Karmad, killing 16 of them. One of them is wounded and we are advising three others who fortunately escaped the tragedy to understand what exactly happened, “said Mokshada Patil, Superintendent of Police (Aurangabad Rural).

SCR officials said the incident occurred at 5.22 a.m. between Badnapur and Karmad stations in the Parbhani and Manmad section under the Nanded division.

SCR Director of Public Relations CH Rakesh said: “The incident occurred even when the crazy train pilot honked the horn as soon as he noticed the group of people violating the train track and also made every effort to stop the train “

The train comprised empty containers for petroleum products and headed from Cherlapalli in Telangana to Manmad in Maharashtra.

According to authorities, the workers left Jalna at 7 p.m. Thursday and I walked on the way to Badnapur and then I moved to the track. They decided to stop after walking about 36 km and fell asleep at the crash site.

Immediately after receiving the information, the Railway Protection Force personnel, including senior officials and other departments, arrived at the scene. A medical aid van with doctors and nurses was also moved to the scene.

Railroads have appointed Ram Kripal, Rail Safety Commissioner, South Central Circle, to conduct an independent investigation into the incident.

Disturbing scenes were seen in Karmad as police and rescue teams collected the mutilated bodies.

“According to initial reports, it appears that they started walking on Thursday night from Jalna and after walking 40 km and exhausted from their journey, they decided to rest on the track, where they fell asleep. They planned to walk to Bhusaval, but the tragedy struck, ”said a policeman from the Karmad police station.

The Madhya Pradesh government has announced Rs. 5 lakh like ex-gratia for the families of deceased workers.

Distressed PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted: “Extremely distressed at the loss of life due to the train accident in Aurangabad, Maharashtra. I have spoken to the Minister of Railways, Shri Piyush Goyal, and he is closely following the situation. All possible assistance required is being provided. ”

Railways minister Piyush Goyal said relief operations were underway and that he had ordered an investigation into the accident.

BJP leader and Jalna deputy Raosaheb Danve said he was trying to determine what forced the workers to start walking to their home villages even though the Maharashtra government began to transport the workers through the Shramik special trains.

“I cannot comment on the incident, except to say that it is deeply disturbing. I am on my way to Jalna to find out whether or not the workers were given adequate food during the period of confinement. I know of companies that have housed and fed their migrant workers, ”he told a vernacular news channel.
