The second phase of the Vande Bharat mission, aimed at bringing back Indian citizens stranded abroad due to the necessary blockade situation due to the coronavirus, will launch between May 16 and 22.
The mission will bring back Indians from 31 nations. According to sources, 149 flights, including connecting flights, will be deployed for the mission.
The government began this mission, one of the largest initiatives to repatriate citizens back to India on May 7.
India has been under blockade since March 25 to stem the spread of the new coronavirus, which has infected more than 70,000 people and has killed some 2,290 people in the country so far.
“6,037 Indians have returned to India on 31 inbound flights operated by Air India and Air India Express under the Vande Bharat mission in 5 days from May 7,” the Ministry of Civil Aviation said in its press release on Tuesday.
Under this mission, the civil aviation ministry is coordinating with the foreign affairs ministry and state governments to bring the Indians back to their homeland.
So far, Indian citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Bangladesh and the Gulf countries have been returned.
