Calcutta:
At least two people, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed in a fire that broke out last night in an eight-story residential building in Kolkata.
The fire broke out in a metering box installed on the ground floor of the building on Ganesh Chandra Avenue and spread to other parts of the building. About 50 families live in the building.
The 12-year-old boy, who died, jumped from the first floor in panic. “The boy had jumped from the first floor of the building in a panic. The body of an elderly woman was also recovered from a floor in the building,” an official said.
At least 10 fire trucks and a hydraulic ladder were deployed to rescue those trapped inside the building and put out the fire.
All other residents of the building have been rescued and the fire is under control, the PTI news agency reported citing Bengal Fire Services Minister Sujit Bose. “All residents have been rescued. The fire is also under control. It is currently cooling down,” said Mr. Bose.
However, smoke was seen coming out of the building this morning even as the fire went out.
