At least 11 people were killed and 36 injured in an explosion at a firecracker factory in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu, about 500 kilometers from Chennai. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed regret over the explosion.

The explosion took place around 1:30 p.m. today.
A local fire department official told NDTV: “The friction during the mixing of chemicals appears to have caused the explosion.”
Ten firefighting units from various locations were brought to the scene to put out the fire, the PTI news agency reported.
Chief Minister E Palaniswami has announced compensation of 3 lakh rupees for the families of those who died in the explosion and 1 lakh rupees for the seriously injured.
The Center has announced 2 lakh rupees for the families of the victims and 50,000 rupees for the injured.
