11 arrested in Chandigarh for disobeying ban on firecrackers: the Tribune India

Chandigarh, November 15

Eleven people have been arrested in Chandigarh for violating the sale ban and setting off firecrackers on Diwali, police said Sunday.

While ten people were arrested for popping firecrackers, another was arrested for selling the cookies, they said.

“According to the instructions of the Chandigarh administration, the sale and use of firecrackers were banned in the Union Territory. To enforce these orders, the Chandigarh police deployed sufficient force to maintain law and order in the city, ”Chandigarh police said in a statement here.

A total of 12 cases were registered under Section 188 of the IPC (disobedience to the order duly promulgated by the public servant) and under the provisions of the Disaster Management Act of 2005 against those who were found selling / popping firecrackers on the night of November 14-15.

The Chandigarh administration had imposed on November 6 a complete ban on the sale and use of firecrackers in the city amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was noted that despite the crackers bursting for a brief period on Diwali last year, the air quality had remained “very poor” in the city.
