1 soldier killed in action, 9 wounded in Maoist attack in Chhattisgarh

The CRPF team was in an anti-Maoist operation when the IED exploded

New Delhi:

An officer from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed and nine others injured after an explosion with an improvised explosive device in the Sukma district of Chhattisgarh set off by Maoists, authorities said today.

The attack took place around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Arabraj metta hills near the Chintalnar forest, more than 450 km from the state capital, Raipur, and wounded personnel were evacuated by helicopter. All of the officers belonged to the 206th Resolute Action Command Battalion (CoBRA).

The improvised explosive device (IED) went off when the CRPF team and local police were on a special operation, Inspector General of Police (Bastar range) Sundarraj P told NDTV.

A CRPF official had said on Saturday that one of the staff members had suffered critical injuries and died this morning.

Subcommander Nitin Bhalerao died of his injuries at 3.30 this morning. He was a resident of Nashik in Maharashtra.

Second-rank officer Dinesh Singh was among those injured and all injured personnel were admitted to a local hospital. They were later transferred to a hospital in the state capital, Raipur, to receive better treatment.

All injured officers are stable now and out of harm’s way.
