India bans 43 apps: China warns of ‘damaging’ ties


“We strongly oppose the repeated use of ‘national security’ by the Indian side as an excuse to ban some mobile apps with a Chinese background,” Ji Rong, a spokesman for India’s embassy in China, said on Wednesday.

The statement said it was banning 43 more applications after the Indian government announced on Tuesday. Many of them are Chinese. Some applications from China’s e-commerce giant Alibaba (Baba)Shopping platforms include AliExpress, workplace messaging tool DingTalk and streaming site Taobao Live. Alibaba did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The ban also hit dating apps.

“These steps have been taken on the basis of inputs related to these applications for engaging in biased activities for India’s sovereignty and integrity, pre-defense, state security and public order activity,” the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement.

In response, the Chinese embassy said that Beijing always required Chinese companies operating in foreign countries to abide by international rules and local laws.

Indian authorities have now banned more than 200 mostly Chinese Apps – including the wildly popular video platform ticket ok in the last five months.

Fatal border clashes in June have strained relations between India and China.
