“We strongly oppose the repeated use of ‘national security’ by the Indian side as an excuse to ban some mobile apps with a Chinese background,” Ji Rong, a spokesman for India’s embassy in China, said on Wednesday.
“These steps have been taken on the basis of inputs related to these applications for engaging in biased activities for India’s sovereignty and integrity, pre-defense, state security and public order activity,” the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in a statement.
In response, the Chinese embassy said that Beijing always required Chinese companies operating in foreign countries to abide by international rules and local laws.
Fatal border clashes in June have strained relations between India and China.
Many Indians called for a boycott of Chinese goods and services, especially from China’s dominant tech industry.
“We urge India to protect the legitimate rights and interests of international investors, including Chinese companies,” a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Wednesday.
The spokesperson added, “The Indian side should immediately rectify this discriminatory practice so as not to further damage the cooperation between the two parties.”
