Thandie Newton, who appeared in a steady stream of movies and TV shows – many of her praised, as well as her performances in it – is well aware that she is an anomaly.

‘I’m a 47 year old black woman. I could not even get a role [now]. It’s very unusual, ‘Newton said in Wednesday’s episode The Big Ticket podcast fan Variety and iHeart. ‘I feel like I’ve been in film for three generations and that’s not what normally happens. There is such a rapid turnover that people are not famous for revealing things and letting people listen, because once one falls out of their fame, people will not pay attention. They will not listen. I feel in a way about the point where a lot of people fall, Westworld gave me another chance that kept me, I think, still relevant and current. “

Newton, who has played the role of Maeve on the HBO drama since debuting in 2016, commented on another interview she gave Greed, in which she spoke candidly about the racism and sexism she encountered in the entertainment sector. Among others the Mission: Impossible 2 actress then said she had a hard time shooting with Tom Cruise because she was afraid of him. Newton also said she was gone Charlie’s Angels after a disturbing encounter with former Sony Pictures head Amy Pascal. (Pascal could not remember the interaction, but said she was “scared.”)

Once Newton’s remarks were out, she said she was applauded for her sincerity, for “not drinking the Kool-Aid.” But that, of course, is not why she expressed herself.

“I was just an older woman who acknowledged that knowing the truth and speaking the truth has benefited me a hell of a lot more than becoming silent when people see to silence me,” he said. Newton. “And I have nothing to lose. I have nothing to lose because I just could not be hired at the time, which is still just normal for people in my generation. That I have nothing to lose and I would rather use this moment … It’s not about confessionalism, it’s not even about my confessions. It’s about the fact that this is the reality of what people encounter. ”

Newton said she expected more blowback. She declined to comment on whether she had heard of Cruise or Pascal.

‘I felt solid the whole time, but I know it scared people. People were very scared … It seems like just how far back are you going? She said.

She expects to return “once next year” to her HBO appearance.
