LAKE ZURICH, Ill. (WLS) – 36 cases of COVID-19 were identified in a group of Lake Zurich High School students who participated in sports camps last week.

Students who were at camp are now quarantined. Health officials said positive cases among residents under the age of 30 are now higher than the general population.

“Our message to youth is that while you may not be at high risk of becoming seriously ill from COVID-19, you are not immune,” said Hanna Goering, communications manager for the Lake County Health Department.

LCHD said the recent increase in cases among youth so far has been related to events prior to the start of sports camps.

“We are hearing many young people report that they had social gatherings. They have been hanging out with their friends. They have been going to slumber parties,” Goering said.

Health officials are now awaiting results from the mobile testing site COVID-19 last weekend at Lake Zurich High School, where more than 350 people were tested.

There are plans to host another mobile test site on Sunday. Students and staff can be tested in the morning and the general public in the afternoon. However, if he now has symptoms, officials emphasize that he should not wait until Sunday to get tested.
