According to Ferenc Jordán, head of the Balaton Limnological Institute, the construction of the green area by the lake should stop immediately.

“If everything continues like this, the lake can even become a green, sleepy posthum, with swimming pools instead of vineyards on the shore,” says Ferenc Jordán, head of the Balaton Limnological Institute, in an interview with VIP.

According to Jordan, the unconditional incorporation of Lake Balaton could have a catastrophic effect on the situation of the lake: “The chemical composition of the water, the plankton, the reeds, the fish are important to understand the functioning of an ecosystem, not just to enjoy it. Unfortunately, knowledge is still incomplete and knowledge integration is weak, there is no real cooperation. Decisions, of course, are made elsewhere, usually not based specifically on our collective knowledge of what goes on in the lake, but in the interest of a handful of people. Decision makers, investors, politicians, ”said the Tihany Institute scientist.

Jordan did not want to predict an exact date, but according to his comments, “sometimes a local algae can develop in a few days and then disappear just as quickly, but in a few years the lake itself can show changes in trend.”

According to the scientist, the only solution would be to quickly ban clearing and construction of all green areas, that is, forests, fields, reed beds, but it is also possible that even a mud dredging would help something in the water more and more algae.

Ferenc Jordán also made himself known nationally among the small followers of science by actually predicting the arrival of the coronavirus in an interview. Among other things, he recently made a statement to hvg.hu about this.
