Take ownership of a special experience, not bent or broken by the previous owner, no need to worry about long-time repairs (not just warranty). Instead of used, there can be many arguments in favor of a new car, you just need to be able to pay. We picked up the cheapest models in the country and found a mild hybrid, SUV, and station wagon in addition to city minis, albeit often with compromises.
Many people gasp when they look at price lists on importers’ websites. Take small cars as an example: the cheapest Skoda Fabia can be taken for 4.84 million HUF, while the Ford Fiesta is priced at 5.01 million and the Mazda 2 is priced at 5.73 million. If you want a new Honda Jazz, you can only get a hybrid for at least HUF 7.32 million, and the significant price increase (up to 5-10 percent) has caught up with almost every brand. One of the many reasons for this is the evolution of the forint-euro exchange rate.
On the other hand, in order not to be included in the Euro-NCAP crash test, manufacturers have to incorporate many safety extras in the standard version of all models, the additional cost of which is borne by customers. Then there are the carbon quotas of the European Union, Since the average limit of 95g / km is exceeded, fines will already have to be paid for the 2020 models. To reduce emissions, engines must be put on a diet (at least with mild hybrid technology), which is also expensive.
In our compilation, we list the cheapest rates on the market, less than four million guilders, not taking into account state subsidies, but taking into account national discounts. Of course, there are dealer promotions and you can often haggle, but overall there are fewer discounted cars – the Lada has been withdrawn from across the EU and even ladders primarily intended for emerging markets, or older generation models, are slowly disappearing from the supply. Let’s see what’s left of our friendly wallet!
Dacias are still the cheapest
The bumper is polished, but the door handle and mirror housing are not, and all colors except navy blue cost extra, even the white from the company car. The standard lock and power window are even standard, and even the fog lamp, but the spare wheel, height-adjustable steering column, and air conditioning all cost extra, the latter 100,000 HUF. Such interest is found in the extracist Dacia Sandero, which is nearing the end of its long model cycle, with a base price of HUF 2.75 million. Plus, even the nicer gas-powered TCe100 LPG Stepway is priced at 3.69 million.
Is there a cheaper type of car in Hungary? The answer is yes, his name is even more familiar to you: Logan. The much less fashionable familiar Sandero with more luggage space per liter available starting at HUF 2.65 million with the same three cylinder anemic suction engine, But even a better equipped diesel would come out in abundance in the four million mark. Of course, Logan’s narrow-body hatchback also indicates that it’s not a customer favorite, but rather a practical pickup (base price for the SCe 75 Ambiance: 2.92 million).
An even more popular option is the only compact SUV in our build, the relatively recent (2018) trendy Duster. The turbocharged three-cylinder base TCe Access model costs just HUF 3.39 million, but in terms of usability and resale, you have to go for the Essential kit, which costs half a million more expensive, because you can only order air conditioning at an additional cost. At the same time, the variants with the best value for money, including those that run on LPG, already exceed four million.
City or family car in Fiat
Panda has been part of the Italian brand’s offering for nine years, but it does not seem to be retiring: starting this year, in addition to the fun 4×4 Twinair variants, it can also be ordered as a mild hybrid. But not these two- or three-cylinder, but the four-cylinder versions are available cheaply, with the old 69-horsepower intake engine and Easy kit for just HUF 3.55 million. The rear headrest and split seat tilt are also optional.
At the same time, Fiat’s best offer is not the typical mini, but the Type 1.4 Sedan with a special offer of HUF 3.89 million (at a list price of 4.05).It is true that it only has 95 horsepower and its instrument cluster is not top quality, but the only one on our list is a classic compact car with a range of seats to match a family car, with the minimum expected equipment, that is, six airbags, radio and air conditioning. Since the Peugeot 301 and the more modest Lada Vesta are not available, no more cars are offered anywhere for less money.
Hyundai and Kia do not neglect the minis
Although more and more manufacturers are withdrawing the mini classics from their offerings or selling them exclusively as electric (see VW-Skoda and Smart, respectively), the Korean group has entered the category with a new type. Delivery of the new Hyundai i10 started at the beginning of the year, which is available from 3.45 million guilders, but the 300,000 Life Plus package with air conditioning and other basic extras is worth adding. Secret tip: for this reason, the sold-out series, but also a larger i20, can be removed at a significant discount (465 thousand guilders).
We cannot find a small car in the offer of the first sister brand, but an urban mini, so that even for refueling, hundreds of thousands remain. Starting at 2.99 million, you can buy the angry-looking Kia Picanto midway through its model cycle, albeit in a standard four-seater and a 67-horsepower bronze. The 84-horsepower, five-seater version is worth more for 3.19 million. It’s important to know that these are still the 2020 Picanto model year prices, and when ordering 21 versions, expect some price increases.
