According to the Italian authorities, the chapels of the Cathedral of San Marcos may also be submerged.

The Mose lock system, which protects Venice in Italy, was not turned on, so water flooded St. Mark’s Square on Tuesday. The water also entered the Cathedral of San Marcos.

The situation is dramatic. If the water level continues to rise, the chapels inside the cathedral can also be submerged. “

Italian authorities reported in the local press.

The mayor of Venice, Luigi Brugnaro, stressed that the water level could rise to 145 centimeters due to the unexpectedly strong sirocco wind.

The lock system did not turn on because forecasters expected only a 130-centimeter flood wave Tuesday morning, the municipality said. The sudden deterioration in weather conditions, however, hit the city unprepared.

Activation of the Mose protection system in Venice must be scheduled 48 hours in advance. In recent days, the system has been turned on twice, which has so far prevented the city from flooding.

The weather in Italy has been harsh for days. Luca Zaia, head of the Veneto region, has reported damage of almost 500 million euros in the northeast.

Italian disaster aid on Tuesday issued the highest alert in the northeast part of the country, as well as in the Rome area and the countryside south of the capital.
