In one day, almost 22,000 new coronavirus infections were recorded in Italy, the worst situation in Lombardy.

Coronavirus: the second wave

Half a year after the spring outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. According to the posters, the second wave also reached Hungary. Follow our news!

The head of the emergency services of Lombardy urged the immediate closure of the province of ten million due to the saturation of hospitals. Guido Bertolini said that all activities must stop, as was the case in March. Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala has responded by making a decision in the next two weeks if the situation worsens.

Like the spring of the outbreak, Lombardy is now the focal point, again with the highest number of new infections, more than five thousand in a single day. In second place is the province of Campania, with almost three thousand cases a day.

Walter Ricciardi, an expert from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health in Rome, said:

Milan and Naples must be closed immediately.

The disease is spreading faster in these cities: in Milan due to the density of labor relations, in Naples due to the intense social life. Genoa is also considered one of the “most infected” cities.

Nationwide, 21,994 new infections were recorded in one day and 221 coronavirus patients died. The number of active infections exceeds 255,000 and the number of victims of the epidemic has reached 37,700. There are almost 14,000 in the hospital, more than 1,400 in the intensive care unit. Intensive care units can still house fewer than seven hundred patients along with non-Covid-19 patients.

The number of deaths and 127 patients admitted to the intensive care unit in one day cite the initial period of the outbreak in early March. Eight of the twenty Italian provinces exceeded the level of health risk. The Institute of Public Health (Iss) emphasized the protection of the elderly, noting that a quarter of the population is over 65 years old.

On Monday, a restriction on the catering industry came into force, according to which bars, cafes and restaurants must close at six in the afternoon. To emphasize the measures, in Rome, for example, the best known spaces will also be closed at night so that young people cannot meet.

On Tuesday, the government adopted a 5 billion euro package to support hospitality: restaurants will be subsidized with an increase of at least 150 percent in their revenues before March, but up to a maximum of 150,000 euros. Their support has risen to 1,000 euros a month in tourism, and their support has been unemployed in the cultural sector. The layoffs were frozen until January 31.

Thirty-three people, including thirteen minors, were arrested in the wake of the riots in Milan and Turin on Monday night as a result of new restrictive measures.
