According to the Austrian Interior Minister, one of the attackers shot by the authorities was a sympathizer of the Islamic State.

The militant attack in central Vienna around 8pm on Monday appears to be a coordinated terrorist attack. The attackers fired in at least six places, according to the Austrian press, at practically everyone. The perpetrators used a series of firearms.

Police said at the briefing Tuesday morning that the attack has had three civilian casualties, all bystanders. In addition to them, 15 were injured, all seriously. Among the injured is a member of the Vienna police. The number of injured is so high because so many were in bars and restaurants the night of the attack, as austerity measures will also take effect in Austria on Tuesday due to the coronavirus epidemic. It was a particularly good time in Vienna on Monday night, with many consuming their orders on the terraces.

The first shots rang out in the Seitenstettengasse, near a synagogue. At first it was suspected that this might have been the target, but the building was closed.

Authorities still got rid of one of the attackers on Monday night. It is known from him, according to Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer, that he was a sympathizer of the Islamic State, so he was clearly driven by anti-Semitic motives. He also had an object that looked like an explosive belt at the time of the attack, but this later revealed that he was only using it as a hoax.

The name and age of the attacker had not yet been revealed, only that he was a male and his apartment had already been searched. However, it is not known if the authorities found anything, and if so, what. The Austrian police are still collecting information and almost 20,000 videos are being reviewed to clarify what happened. These were registered by the population. At the moment, however, it remains to be seen exactly how many people carried out the attack. Authorities are still looking for at least one attacker, but believe the murder has more than two perpetrators. The Austrian press writes about three interested parties.

The police again asked the population to stay home, the children did not have to go to school. The protection of public institutions has been strengthened. Vienna’s city center is still closed, with military vehicles on site.
