Tens of thousands could have waited daily at the Gibraltar-Spain border had there not been an agreement.

An agreement has been reached between Spain and the United Kingdom, and Gibraltar will be part of the Schengen area as of January 1, 2021, Spanish Foreign Minister Arancha González Laya said in Madrid.

The agreement was reached a few hours before the end of the transition period following the end of British membership in the EU at midnight on December 31.

“We have reached an initial agreement with the United Kingdom, which will form the basis of a future agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom on Gibraltar,” said the minister, adding that as part of the agreement, Gibraltar will remain part of the agreements. of the EU, including the Schengen agreement. .

Had there not been an agreement, tens of thousands of Spaniards working in Gibraltar and Gibraltarians working in Spain would have had to go through border controls and stamp their passports every day, the Spanish foreign minister said.
