The European Commission (EC) has concluded another agreement with the pharmaceutical companies Sanofi-GSK.

Coronavirus: the second wave

Half a year after the spring outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, the second wave of the pandemic has arrived. The radical increase in the number of infected is forcing more and more countries to re-impose restrictions, despite the fact that the world economy has not even recovered from the effects of the spring outbreak. According to the posters, the second wave also reached Hungary. Follow our news!

The European Commission on Friday signed another deal with pharmaceutical companies Sanofi-GSK to buy 300 million doses of a promising coronavirus vaccine. Sanofi and GSK (GlaxoSmithKline) are developing a vaccine against Covid-19 using innovative technologies from the two companies.

Member States can donate certain quantities of vaccines to low- and middle-income non-EU countries.

Ursula von der Leyen, chair of the Brussels panel, said the agreement was further proof of the EU’s commitment to ensuring access to safe, effective and affordable vaccines not only for EU citizens, but also for the poorest. and vulnerable of the world. In her speech assessing the situation in the EU, the president drew attention to the dangers of “vaccine nationalism”, arguing that only global cooperation could save lives.

The Brussels panel has previously signed a contract with AstraZeneca and, after preliminary discussions, is negotiating similar deals with other vaccine manufacturers.

In mid-June, the committee adopted its so-called European Vaccine Strategy, which aims to provide high-quality, safe, effective and affordable vaccines to all European citizens within 12 to 18 months. To this end, the Committee, together with the Member States, will make ex ante market commitments with vaccine manufacturers. In the future, this will allow Member States to buy a certain quantity of vaccine at a certain price when the vaccine is available.
