He attacked. The league leader tore his shirt and dropped his necklace.

Matteo Salvini, leader of the Italian opposition party Liga, was attacked by an immigrant at a campaign event in Tuscany on Wednesday, where regional elections will be held September 20-21.

The Directorate of Investigation Against Terrorism (Digos) has initiated an investigation to clarify what was happening in Pontassieve. According to police sources, for the moment it is ruled out that the aggressor acted intentionally.

Matteo Salvini campaigned on the streets of Pontassieve, near Florence, when a 30-year-old woman approached him and attacked him: tore and then tore the shirt of the anti-immigration politician and tore the crosses from his neck. The woman was quickly arrested. It turns out that he is of Ghanaian descent, living and working in Italy with a residence permit. Authorities said the woman committed her “annoying” act.

The politician later said from the community side that he had not been hurt. “I have no anger, I do not want revenge, only sadness,” wrote Matteo Salvini.

The incident was condemned by all the major parties. Giorgia Meloni, president of the right-wing Italian Brothers Italians (FdI), referring to the ruling parties, believed that those responsible should be among those who portray their political rivals as enemies. Matteo Salvini, political leader of the ruling Five Star Movement (M5S) party, also called the events unacceptable and expressed his solidarity with Luigi Di Maio.

Elections will be held in seven Italian regions from September 20-21. In Tuscany, which has been led by the left for fifty years, the League and the Democratic Left Party (PD) candidate for the region’s presidency are face to face in the polls.

The former editorial office of index.hu has essentially ceased to exist, the country has lost its most read online interface. This is one of the most serious blows to the independent Hungarian press and freedom of information to date. The number of independent power editorial boards is steadily declining, and those that still exist are trying to stay afloat in a growing headwind. At HVG, we persevere, not giving in to pressure to bring in national and international news every day.
