Within a week, the second young elephant also died from a viral infection at the Syracuse Zoo in upstate New York.
– That’s the worst thing that could have happened. We breastfeed intensively for more than a week. The team hoped that each day Batu survived his chances of beating the disease increased, said Ted Fox, director of the Rosamond Gifford Zoo.

The five-year-old fainted on Friday morning, a few days after his younger brother Ajay. Ajay died on Tuesday, before his second birthday. Both animals were subjected to EEHV (elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus), which occurs in Asian elephants.
Batu was in treatment for a week after his test came back positive. He received medication and blood plasma, but was unable to defeat the virus.
The disease can be activated without a sign
EEVV is one of the most dangerous diseases of young Asian elephants,
can cause death in up to 24 hours in people under 8 years of age. They believe it can occur naturally among elephants and can be activated without a signal, the zoo said.
A total of six adult elephants live in the Syracuse Zoo. Batu was the first calf of a female named Mali and Doc, born in May 2015. Ajay was born in January 2019.
