The efforts of Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte have been in vain, and yet appliance maker Whirlpool closes its Naples plant. The decision was notified to four hundred employees via SMS on Thursday night, stating that they will receive their salary before December 31, writes hvg.hu with reference to Corriere.it.

Although the intentions of the US company may have been known earlier, the workers, according to the union, were still affected by the news of the November shutdown as a cold shower because the company had not communicated with them about it. And a representative of the Fiom-Cgil union complained that, although the company claims to stop making washing machines, the Naples production lines will continue to operate at an Indian plant.

The Italian prime minister told the unions that the government did everything it could to get the company to change its mind: they were offered tax breaks, subsidies, development contracts, to no avail. Workers demonstrated at roadblocks in protest on Friday.
