One of our moving holidays is Pentecost, the date of which falls on different days each year. It depends on when Pentecost is Sunday and Pentecost is Monday, when it was Easter: Holidays in late spring and early summer always expire on the seventh Sunday and Monday after Easter.

In 2020, Pentecost will be on Sunday, May 31 and Pentecost will be on Monday, June 1. Because of this, the last weekend in May will be a long three-day weekend, as Pentecost Monday is a public holiday.

What do we celebrate on Pentecost?

Pentecost is a Christian holiday: it is believed that on the fiftieth day after Easter, the Holy Spirit filled the apostles. In religious manifestation this is called outpouring, and by this is meant the presence of God and the manifestation of his grace. Easter celebrates with Pentecost.

There are several customs associated with the festival in Hungarian culture, many of which date back to pre-Christian times and were previously celebrated as a spring greeting. In many places, Pentecostal trees erected on May 1 were either demolished on Pentecost, or green branches were attached to the fences of the women’s houses. At that time, a Pentecostal king was also chosen on the basis of games of skill, which then carried a series of privileges, for example, he was official in all amusements and could consume it for free.
