Walnuts may disappear from Hungary 24.hu

The nutcracker drill appeared in Hungary only a few years ago, but since it has no natural enemies yet, it has wreaked havoc on the Hungarian harvest over the narrow decade, Magyar Nemzet writes. “Walnuts are not only damaged by this insect, but also by other pests, and quite a few pathogens do not spare our fruit, which is essential to obtain more food.”

More and more people are complaining that without protection, there is less and less chance of rescuing the walnut crop in the fall, which is increasingly the victim of pests. Damage to the nutshell fly has been drastic in recent years.

Walnuts also have a number of pests, perhaps more economically stressed by pathogens, most notably bacterial and fungal diseases and the recently emerging invasive pest, the walnut shell dragonfly. And a virus also attacks the tree, known as the walnut ringspot, the newspaper writes. “This pathogen is not new, but its importance is quite high, since it can not only cause loss of crops, but after its appearance, unlike cherries, walnut gradually dies.”

Furthermore, due to climate change, the situation seems increasingly serious.
