Virologist: Hungarian test positivity is growing alarmingly

“Last time the number of daily samples was around 16,000, the positive test rate was 15-17%. Today, with the same number of test samples, it was over 40%! So it has been established a new record that paints a big exclamation point for everyone. ” – wrote in his Facebook post Gábor Kemenesi, virologist, assistant professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Pécs. He sees that the spread of the epidemic is not reduced and individual protection against the virus is important.

Gábor Kemenesi is concerned about the increase in test positivity in the Hungarian data. According to data from Sunday morning, the number of identified infections increased by 6,819 in 24 hours and 156 patients died. A total of 16,311 tests were carried out, and 41.81 percent of the samples taken confirmed the presence of the virus according to the infection figures. The rate is eight times higher than what the World Health Organization has set as the limit at which the virus can still be said to be under control: this is tied to a 5 percent level.

The proportion is also well above the WHO maximum of 12%. In this situation, the organization says that the test number should be increased until it reaches the 12 to 5 percent level. This is because if infected people are eliminated, it slows down so they can transmit the disease, which would eventually lead to a flattening of the epidemic curve, reducing pressure on the care system. In Austria, the situation is better than at home, but the government is unwilling to make serious flexibilities.

Hungary is now a long way from controlling the epidemic, as shown in the graph below.

Thus, Kemenesi notes in his Facebook post that “the last time the number of daily samples was around 16,000, the positive test rate was 15-17%. Today, with the same number of test samples! , surpassed 40%! So a new record was set that paints a big exclamation point for everyone. “

Therefore, the virologist recommends that everyone:

  • avoid unnecessary community participation, grouping
  • also reduce the number of occasions and durations in terms of socializing (e.g. shopping)
  • mask, distance, hand washing
  • go on and go beyond any epidemiological measure

“Let’s do it for each other, let’s do it for hospitals, our healthcare workers, our humanities, our jobs, our economy, and ourselves. Don’t let the virus spread because it threatens everything at once,” Kemenesi adds, who said new antigen tests. the results may include patients in the statistics, while the number of samples taken does not, but in essence, “it would not change either, the epidemic is still very long, we need additional attention from everyone, a difficult winter awaits us.”
