Vidnyánszky gave a stabbing liberal response to the Berlin Theater, which resigned from the National Theater Festival over the SZFE scandal

The Berliner Ensemble, founded by Bertolt Brecht, one of Europe’s most famous theaters, announced on Friday that: “It supports the protest of the students and professors of the University of Theater and Cinematographic Arts and therefore cancels the guest performance of Medea at the MITEM festival in Budapest.”

Attila Vidnyánszky, the festival organizer, now responded in an open letter to the Ensemble’s mayor. The key word in the short print, not the least conflicting, is “open”, it is in each paragraph. The writing of the director of color, who currently occupies the SZFE in the midst of fierce liberalization, is literally the only great defense of fundamental liberal values. Here is the full text:

Dear Oliver Reese,

The MITEM team and I, personally, are very sorry that the Berliner Ensemble has canceled its participation in 2021 at the National Theater Festival. I have always had the hope that although our worldviews are different, we still understand each other so that we can have a tolerant and open exchange of ideas about the values that we consider important.

I am sure that you and the Berliner Ensemble, Oliver, have lived and experienced that MITEM is a diverse European festival open to the world. We are proud that, since 2018, three performances by the Berliner Ensemble have been shown on the MITEM program.

MITEM is an open festival where artists with different points of view continue to be invited.

Kind regards, Attila Vidnyánszky
