Charles Leclerc, Verstappen and Perez battled for third place on the straight between Turns 3 and 4, there was a time when the three of them were side by side. Leclerc tried to overtake in the inner arc, but did not expect Pérez from the outer arc, which was thus turned by the young Monaco as a result of a brake.
Verstappen had to avoid the incident but eventually drove to the gravel bed of the rollover, his car became unmanageable and crashed into the wall. Leclerc was also eliminated, and Pérez fell back to last place, and had to leave the area.
“I had a good start, but Valtteri (Bottas) passed me, so I had to step on the accelerator,” explained the Dutchman. “From then on, it was about surviving among the many cars. I don’t know why you had to be so aggressive. “I have no idea why Charles had to drive like this into Turn 4 and brake so late unnecessarily. What did you expect? Checo couldn’t see anything at all, he finally turned in front of me, I tried to get out so that the car wouldn’t be damaged, but I couldn’t avoid the gravel bed any more and from then on it didn’t matter ”, concluded the Dutchman.
Leclerc tried to explain his maneuver, he thought Perez was trying to overtake Bottas in the outer arc for second place, leaving him with space inside, but they finally collided when Perez chose the inner arc.
“I think I was in fifth place alongside Max, trying to overtake him at Turn 4,” Leclerc began. “I saw Checo, but I was expecting him to try to go to the outer arch with Valtteri, but then he decided to stay inside, and I was already there by then.”

To a huge surprise, Pérez finally won the race after falling back to last place after the accident. After the race, the judges decided to hit Charles Leclerc with a three-place starting penalty at the end of the season.
