Valéry Giscard d’Estaing, former president of France, who died at 94, was one of the key figures in European integration in the early 1970s. Giscard, who ruled France from 1974 to 1981, was treated for breathing difficulties in Tours before his death. He was still discharged from the hospital at the time, but was hospitalized again in mid-November. According to his family, he suffered complications from the covid infection.
“His health has deteriorated, he has died as a result of covid-19,” his family told AFP in a statement.
According to the Valéry Giscard d’Estaing Foundation, the deceased will be buried in the closest family circle according to his will.
The veteran politician’s last public appearance was at the funeral of former Prime Minister Jacques Chirac last year.
During his presidency of the liberal politician, who came to power at age 48 after the Gaullist decades, he took serious steps to liberalize French society, legalizing abortion and the institution of divorce by consensus under his leadership. The liberalization of the economy can also be linked to its name, as can the start of construction of the TGV high-speed rail network.
He was president in a single term, defeating the socialist François Mitterand in the 1981 presidential elections.
Christophe Castaner, the leader of the parliamentary faction of Emmanuel Macron’s ruling party, which sees the liberal politician as its political precursor, has praised his “modern and determined politics”, which he said “will determine his judgment for a long time.”
Together with German Chancellor Giscard Helmut Schmidt, he founded the European Monetary System, the monetary union, the end result of which was the introduction of the single European currency, the euro. And it was the first to summon the main economic powers of the world, the last G7. (Via The Guardian)
