– Did you come home?
“Yes,” Tímea Babos replied to the National Sports with relief. As he was the first to write to National Sport Online on Saturday, hours before the official announcement, he and Kristina Mladenovic from France were excluded from the women’s doubles competition, so the most successful Hungarian tennis player immediately jumped on the plane.

– Where is?
– I’m on my way to Sopron. I was surprised that even after so many negative coronavirus tests, I have been ordered to undergo mandatory quarantine, I have to stick the red paper at my house in Sopron. Supposedly I can come up with another negative test.

“Could you summarize how you lived in New York?”
– Frenchman Benoit Paire produced a positive coronavirus test about ten days ago. Health professionals initiated an immediate contact investigation: Twenty participants stood out, eleven of whom were named as close contacts who got into the bubble within the bubble. They were given their own security guard, they could only train and leave their room for their games, they couldn’t go to the community areas, they couldn’t use the elevators. Then, before Frenchman Adrian Mannarino’s singles match, he was suddenly told that he couldn’t play because he was jeopardizing epidemiological safety. Our hotel is located in Nassau County, and the health authority there unexpectedly quarantined anyone who came into contact with a person with coronavirus. After all, Mannarino was finally allowed to play, but we, more precisely, that he wasn’t the next day. An incomprehensible, unfair, evil decision, that’s my opinion.

– How did you hear the news?
“When the problem arose before Mannarino’s game, the supervisor told me that if Mannarino could play, chances are that we, if not, neither. When he took the field against German Alexander Zverev, I calmed down. Then in the evening, they were invited to an online conference where they were told that they had changed the decision, that Kiki could not play the next day. The only chance for the organizers was to postpone our second round match until Sunday to see if they could still do something in the meantime. I was starting training on Saturday when the supervisor called: there was no chance they wouldn’t rule us out.

“In that case, could it have happened that you too would be quarantined?”
– Yes, so immediately after announcing to the supervisor, I fixed all the mandatory on the runway, bought the plane ticket and ran back to the hotel. Of course it was a traffic jam, I only came back for an hour, and my plane took off at half past six, and the luggage was not in two minutes either … But the fact is that I got to the plane. She couldn’t wait to finally land in Paris, Europe.

– And Mladenovic?
“You have to stay in quarantine until Sunday, but I know that the French players in quarantine are trying to make sure that everyone can get to the airport through a security corridor and leave the country in a private jet.

– You, on the other hand, were completely innocent of being punished for not playing Paire …
– Exactly. I complied with all restrictive measures, I did not go anywhere. There were arcades in the hotel, but I only came down to play basketball, even with Marcius Fucsovics. I didn’t meet anyone, I followed the rules. We were introduced to Kiki first, there was a smaller board, we played well in the first match despite the long failure, so I feel very unfair that they took the opportunity to get another Grand Slam trophy, not to mention the material and mental damage . What’s more, Kiki was particularly motivated by her quarantine, as she could at least get out of her room, in the air, due to doubles training and matches. Paire’s case is also peculiar: after five negative tests, two positive, then four negative again … How could the virus get into the bubble, or if it did, why aren’t there more positive cases? Anyway, close contacts played about ten games in five days, but that didn’t bother anyone. Incomprehensible.

– Before the US Open, tennis players had to sign a paper to start, so that they could not sue the organizers even if they could die of a coronavirus infection because of them. Could this exclusion not have legal consequences either?
“I will show this paper to the lawyers and the French will do the same.” I do not know if it could have consequences, but we will analyze the matter.

“And he started at this US Open by sticking to the decision for months before …”
“Yes, I ended up making the trip because I didn’t want to miss a Grand Slam tournament. Compared to the circumstances, the organization was sorted out, but it was still very difficult to stay in the hotel room all the time, even outdoors, wear a mask away from everyone, take a bus three hours a day, also with a mask. It was stressful both mentally and physically. The American Alliance definitely wanted to keep the US Open for financial reasons, but from our point of view, everything turned out terrible. If you have to compete like this in the long run, the whole world will go crazy …
