Ukraine, a non-NATO member, has launched an attack against a national minority belonging to a NATO member, the foreign minister said in a video uploaded to his community on Tuesday, adding that he has called on the member states of the Atlantic organization that show solidarity.
Péter Szijjártó provided information on the annual meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers in the form of a videoconference. He said he briefed allied foreign ministers on what was happening in Ukraine at the moment.
He explained: on Monday, the Ukrainian secret service occupied the headquarters of the Hungarian Cultural Association of Transcarpathia (KMKSZ), which provides political representation to Hungarians in Transcarpathia. the home of the association’s president, László Brenzovics, the Hungarian College of Transcarpathia and the offices of the organization that runs the Transcarpathian economic development program, to carry out house searches “aggressively” there. Armed commandos were in the hallways of the university. Péter Szijjártó emphasized that Hungarians who lived under the communist dictatorship know how to intimidate and humiliate people in the Soviet way. This happened on Monday in Ukraine, where The clear intimidation of Hungarians and the incitement to Hungarian hatred remain at the level of central government policy. – He said, adding that if it were not like that, the commandos would not have kicked the door to the president of the KMKSZ. Obviously, this is a scandal and unacceptable in the 21st century, the minister said, highlighting mainly from a country that says it wants to get closer to NATO. Péter Szijjártó addressed the NATO foreign ministers with two requests. In addition to showing solidarity, they should not pressure Hungary to abandon its veto on holding NATO-Ukraine Council meetings at ministerial level.
Referring to a home search on Monday, he said after such events, no one can expect a gesture. In this context, the minister has also said that the European Union’s foreign ministers will meet in Brussels next Monday and raise the issue there, asking colleagues to “speak out” on this issue and show their solidarity.
At Tuesday’s meeting of NATO foreign ministers, Péter Szijjártó also addressed the Western Balkans. According to the minister, the European Union (EU) could take the example of NATO, which has already added three countries from the Western Balkans to the alliance, which has contributed greatly to strengthening regional security. Added:
Hungary continues to help the Western Balkan countries that are not yet members of the EU or NATO. Hungary has increased the number of its troops involved in the peacekeeping operation in Kosovo to 407. In recognition of this, next year Hungary will hand over the commander of the Kosovo peacekeeping force, KFOR, which is a great recognition, said the minister. In Sarajevo, the Hungarian ambassador will act as NATO liaison officer. In addition to the Bosnian government, the Hungarian government has also delegated an expert on NATO integration, he said.
Péter Szijjártó emphasized that one of the most important challenges in the Western Balkans is illegal migration, therefore Hungary will continue to contribute to NATO operations that help curb migratory pressures on Europe by stabilizing local conditions. Thus, Hungary will continue to support the Afghanistan mission with 67 soldiers and the Iraqi mission with 135 soldiers, the foreign minister said.
