The US Department of Commerce will issue a decree on Friday that will make it impossible to download the TikTok video exchange and WeChat messages in the US starting Sunday, Reuters news agency reported.

US President Donald Trump has ordered a ban on the two apps developed by China in the US, citing security risks. These companies have long been accused of collecting data on Chinese secret service video-sharing users, as a 2017 law requires Chinese companies to cooperate with the secret service. TikTok denied that user data had been shared with Chinese authorities.

Trump also prohibits transactions behind the company behind WeChat and the services provided to them (such as hosting). These rules will only apply to TikTok as of November 12, and according to Reuters sources, the president may revoke the regulation before it takes effect if Bytedance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, reaches an agreement with Oracle in the US. To start a business. that would guide TikTok’s operations in the United States by addressing Washington’s concerns.

According to those familiar with the plans, the regulation does not prohibit US companies from transacting abroad via WeChat, which is the most important payment method in China other than messaging. Apple and Google may continue to make TikTok and WeChat available to users outside of the United States. (New York Times, MTI)
