Top 10: Hungary’s most popular used cars

In our previous article on the cheapest new cars (less than 4 million HUF), we covered the surprisingly high average value of purchases, but keep in mind that the majority of purchases at hair salons are still corporate. For people, buying a more affordable used car is more of a reality, with 511,000 cars changing ownership in the first eight months of this year, according to Datahouse. As the Jóautó.hu announcement points out, the decline was only 3 percent compared to the same period last year, that is, after the spring period of the coronavirus epidemic, the market rebounded for the summer, people give and receives.

Used car imports were also significant in the first eight months of 2020 (87,006 units), however, average prices cannot be said to have dropped, especially for small or compact suction gasoline models. In addition to the popularity of the price category between HUF 1.5 and 2.0 million, the demand for older vehicles, which cost less than half a million, also increased, partly because they provide individual mobility rather than public transport. In our list, we present the 10 favorite models on the market seasoned with some buying advice, all focused on the generation that matches the average age of the brand’s stock.

1. Opel Astra

The Astra G is not teardrop shaped, but has good rust protection, is reliable, and can be viewed from a wide range. The latter is not only explained by the fact that during its long production cycle (under the name Classic, which came from Poland from 2003 to 2009), many were bought new, but many were also imported into the country second-hand. Its simple chassis is robust, like the Ecotec engines, But it is worth paying attention to a service interval of 15,000 kilometers instead of 30,000, sometimes breaking the nozzle of the water pump or coking the EGR valve. Of the diesels, the 1.7 Isuzu engine is the most recommended.

Astra Gs were bought at home with smaller engines (1.4 and 1.6) and more modest equipment, and second-hand ones tend to be more expensive. He began to take on his role as a people’s car in the H SeriesSource: Opel

Based on the Opel fleet’s average age of 15.6 years, the Astra G is now a real people’s car, while an increasing number of predecessor F models also produced in Szentgotthárd are being dismantled, usually due to to oxidation. Not only do they make up the bulk of the range, but the H models, built since 2004, have a choice of solid bodywork, pesky sequential whisker clutches, or turbocharged or variable control (XER) gasoline engines, but sadly sometimes too they eat the oil. The long-wheelbase pickup is popular, and it’s true for nearly all Astra’s that excel in practicality rather than experience.

2. Suzuki Swift

Since the demise of the oriental cars of the Mercury era, no model has dominated the street scene like Esztergom’s “old Swift”. Although it did not perform well in terms of comfort and safety, it was agile, inexpensive and indestructible in its mechanics. Maybe on the go for decades they could have kept up if they hadn’t caught up on rust, but even a large chunk of today’s second-hand sales are made up of our cars, of course in the cheapest category, so actually , has already handed the baton over to its much more modern successor, the third generation, Made “iron” for Swift since 2005.

For a long time, this model also dominated the new car sales charts, but the post-2008 economic crisis ended its career. and then the bank withdrew many borrowed copies, others had no money to support troubled landlords. So, in addition to paying attention to some type defects (ABS hubs, shift bearings), it is important to avoid sloppy copies when buying as it can cost a lot later. The meager diesel isn’t ideal either, but with the 1.3 and 1.5 variable speed engines it’s a great deal among small cars of similar age, plus it’s not that bad to look at and drive.

3. Ford Focus

Ford followed an unusual choreography: in 2003, the SUV called the C-Max came first, and just a year later the technically identical Focus II was introduced. It also sold well in its new era, and a lot has come to the country second-hand in recent years, but no matter where it came from: in the winter, intensely salty regions can cause serious problems with type-specific corrosion. It is also worth paying attention to the problems of soaking, misfires in gasoline, instrument cluster and trunk lock, as well as standard components (common-rail pump, flywheel) for PSA diesel engines.

Those who drive little or mostly in the city may be even more interested in gasoline, ranging from a dim 1.4 to an acceptable compromise of 100 horsepower 1.6 (which also drove police cars) to 1.8. or Mazda engines up to 2.0 liters; the latter, however, is a type defect due to increased oil consumption due to poor piston rings. We must highlight the Focus II. among the virtues of the great chassis, good drivability, adequate seats, especially as a station wagon, moderate parts prices, and a large selection that even supports convertible and ST coupes.

4. Volkswagen Golf V.

For more than three decades, the national market has been one of the favorites of the Golf generations, among them the rugoso II. series, whose durability rivals that of the Mercedes W124. Today, the Golf IV realistically enters the world of popular cars. means the ticket, but for about 700-800 thousand florins you can already get the most viewed copies of the successor model. Even on cars that appear intact from a distance, the fenders and sills can rust (partly from the mud behind the drum insert), and the switch covers and door pullers in the passenger compartment tend to peel. , it is worth looking more carefully.

In the case of diesels, care must be taken with connecting rod bearings, and in the case of gasoline engines, instead of direct injectors (FSI), most people look for simpler basic designs, obviously without no reason. While technically interesting, the turbocharged 1.4 TSI version should be specifically avoided, however the Golf’s sophisticated chassis, careful design and wide range of equipment make it a pleasant car to use, even after ten years. For those with little room for five doors, in addition to the station wagon and hatchback (Jetta), you can also choose the Plus as a raised roof, while the actual SUV ran as a Touran.

5. Volkswagen Passat

Based on the average age of the Hungarian VW fleet, two generations in Passat, B5 and B6, are the subject of most sales. If not in terms of form, in terms of technical solutions, the previous series definitely has more interesting things, in which, in addition to the 1.8 turbocharged engines in Győr, V5, V6 and, as a real curiosity, gasoline has also been incorporated intake W8. Most of them have already replaced the four-cylinder TSIs in the successor B6 series, although, of course, the hits of the time were fuel-efficient diesel engines. Today, most TDIs have run as long as if they had bypassed the equator at least ten times, but the design itself is durable and there is a lot to look for to detect type defects (such as drive shaft wear oil pump).

Is there light at the end of the tunnel? You can find a B6 pickup for less than a million guilders, but if it’s worn it can easily become a graveyard of money.Source: Volkswagen

The older (long engine) series is supported by the fact that diesel technology is simpler, a more beautiful specimen can be captured at the same price, the galvanized breed tends to rust only when broken, but the front suspension audibly complex and, of course, less modern design. For its successor, caution with FSI engines does not hurt, and for Pumpe-Düse diesels, the Bosch injector is the latest or best common rail design instead of the Siemens. With the excellent DSG transmission in its new era, caution doesn’t hurt either, and the interior can also age ugly, but from the outside it can still take the shape of the B6.
