Freddie mercury he won the hearts of millions of people as a singer of the band Queen, he made himself in history as one of the most iconic figures of the 20th century, he was a true showman on stage as a talented performer. He was able to communicate with the public with rare common sense, and even today few musicians can.

It was characterized by an extravagant and special style in the 70s and 80s: it often attracted attention with flashy and bourgeois clothes. However, over time, he became more restrained for two reasons, his age on the one hand and his deteriorating health on the other, reads Freddie Mercury – The Great Pretender – A Life in Pictures, written by Sean O’Hagan.

The day before Freddie Mercury’s death, he only confessed that he was seriously ill.

According to official data, Freddie Mercury was found to be HIV positive in 1987, although, as the author of the book said, everything about the exact date is not yet clear. At the time, very few people were making it known that he was struggling with a terminal illness, and his closest friends and band members only knew about it.

“Very sad days followed, seriously, but Freddie did not get bitter.” He endured the fact that he was going to die. He accepted, because at some point we will all die. (…) He accepted that he was now among the unfortunate, he did not regret anything. Well maybe one thing though, that there is still so much music stuck on it, the book’s author, Peter Freestone, Mercury’s personal assistant, quoted an earlier interview.

Mercury’s great love, Mary Austin, with whom he lived from 1969 to 1976, was also one of the initiates. Even after their breakup, their relationship remained very close, they couldn’t even imagine their lives without each other, no wonder they inherited half of their wealth. The woman described Mercury’s later years as follows:

– He did not look for excuses, but accepted the inevitable.

Now it was clear how incredibly brave he was.

When Mercury shared the sad news with his friends, he asked everyone not to mention his illness to him again. He did not want this condition to take over his life, so he did not share with the public for years that he had AIDS. He lived his daily life as if everything were the same, acted the same way and made albums with the Queen, he even bought a new apartment in Montreux, Switzerland, which he had arranged in a luxurious way, although he knew exactly that he would probably never live in it. For the rest of his life, he insisted on eating in a restaurant, sometimes staying in bed for days just to gather strength to dine with his friends in an exclusive place.

As the years passed, on the outside he looked increasingly ill. When the video clip for the song I’m Going Slightly Mad was filmed in February 1991, he was wearing a straight wig and wearing black and white, pantomimes, he didn’t want people to see anything suspicious on the outside. In May 1991, the last video he starred in was These Are The Days Of Our Lives. Unusually, he only stood in one spot during filming, as walking was already causing him great pain.

Queen’s last single was released in October 1991, when even Mercury was alive, it was Show Must Go On, the show has to go on. Interestingly, the B-side of the album featured their 1973 issue Keep Yourself Alive. A month later, on November 23, 1991, the musician announced that he had died of AIDS the next day, November 24, at his home in Kensington. AIDS caused pneumonia that caused his death.

“Fame has not stolen his soul and, as his later years have shown, it has not eroded his dignity. Until the last minute, he remained a showman, an illusionist, and a chameleon, a prima donna who played on stage at the same time, and an astonishingly withdrawn private individual. He also received death in his own way: the author of the publication expressed his opinion on the legend.
