Atlanta police said Thomas Jefferson Byrd, an actor also known for several of Spike Lee’s films, was killed. Police said they received a report at 2.30pm Saturday night, and when they arrived at the scene, the 70-year-old actor was found dead, and it turned out that the man was shot multiple times in the back by an unknown assailant. writes The Guardian.

Police have yet to release further details about Byrd’s death as part of the investigation. Lee himself was the first to announce the man’s death on Instagram: in a Sunday post, he said goodbye to the actor who starred in several of his films. The director then prepared several scenes that featured Byrd.

Byrd also acted in plays and was nominated for Tony in 2003 after his performance in a Broadway play.

Many of his colleagues have said goodbye to the actor in the past 24 hours, including Oscar winner Viola Davis, who wrote about how much she loved working with Byrd.
