Péter Köves, Tolna County Disaster Management Spokesperson, said the mobile disaster management laboratory is making continuous measurements in the immediate vicinity of the accident, and the Kalocsa fire brigade continues to block the spread of chlorine gas with a protective beam . The gas concentration level in the air outside the protection zone is still below the danger limit, neither the surrounding plants nor the population are in danger.

The company said that a 4,500 liter hippo stored in a 6 cubic meter tank was mixed with 400 liters of nitric acid for reasons unknown until now, releasing significant amounts of chlorine gas and leaving several sick at the plant site.

The incident affected 47 workers at the plant, 28 of whom were taken to a hospital for examination and three are under observation, the company said.

Pál Győrfi, spokesman for the National Ambulance Service, informed the MTI that thirteen people had suffered serious poisoning and 15 mild poisonings. Symptoms of gas poisoning included sore throat, tearing, coughing, and shortness of breath. The wounded were taken to the Dunaújváros, Székesfehérvár, Szekszárd and Kecskemét hospitals for care and observation.
