The man’s cause of death has yet to be determined.

They confirmed they had shot a bear in North Carolina’s Great Smoky Mountains National Park after wildlife guards discovered that the animal was eating a human corpse, Ladbible writes.

The rangers were alerted by a hiking company that discovered an empty store not far from them. Authorities immediately set out to search for the missing and soon found the body of a man. A black bear was also found at the scene, “actively pushing” the carcass, causing the guards to shoot the animal.

It is not yet known what caused the man’s death, authorities did not reveal his identity, only that he had come to the national park from another state.

Hikers are already fighting black bears in the field multiple times, and these encounters often end in tragedy. Two years ago, another specimen was also found alongside a human corpse, and five years ago, a 16-year-old boy suffered serious injuries when he and his father were attacked by a black bear.

The Great Smoky Mountains are the busiest national park in the United States, with nearly 12.5 million people visiting here each year.
