In the case of János Nagy, former Deputy Secretary of State for Lands in the Ministry of Agriculture, the prosecutor’s office headed by Péter Polt requested a criminal investigation, for which he also received a political tracker investigated for his corruption case.

By order of December 3, the Central District Court of Buda ordered the criminal supervision of János Nagy, according to the motion of the prosecutor, until the decision of the court of first instance in preparation of the trial, but no later than 1 of April 2021. The court also ordered that the movement of the former Deputy Secretary of State be monitored by the police, according to the response of Chief Prosecutor Péter Polt, who delivered a question to László Varga, representative of the Hungarian Socialist Party, in relation to the case corruption, which hvg.hu warned.

The background to the case was that on December 2, the Budapest Regional Investigation Prosecutor’s Office announced that abuse of office was a crime and was investigating other crimes in the case of János Nagy, Undersecretary of State for Territorial Affairs. Based on the details known so far, in the summer of 2020, a mixed farming entrepreneur, also dedicated to animal husbandry, planned to start a new agricultural company with state support available through a tender. According to the well-founded suspicion, the contractor offered an undue advantage to assist in the successful award of the tender for the investment and the acquisition of land using the contacts derived from the official position of a high ministerial official.

Due to the hundreds of millions of guilders of non-refundable support that the businessman planned to earn through the exercise of official influence, the businessman recommended to the ministry official a 5% stake in the expected successful venture. The senior official accepted the offer and acquired the promised stake in the newly established agricultural enterprise.

According to the Attorney General’s response, two people were questioned as suspects in the case, but the competent prosecutor obtained documents and records, conducted investigations and searches, and held interviews with witnesses and suspects.
