The mayor of Venice made an urgent call to stay home and close the windows after an explosion at a shore-based chemical plant in Marghera on Friday, writes the MTI.

A thick cloud of black smoke rose from the chemical plant after an explosion around ten o’clock. According to the first news, two workers were injured, one of them in serious condition. About 90 firefighters and a special chemical emergency response team are working at the site.

The provincial chief Luca Zaia expressed his concern about what happened, the Venetian mayor Luigi Brugnaro issued a decree on his communal area to immediately notify the public that whoever could stay in his apartment and close the windows.

Chemical danger sirens sounded in the port of Marghera, opposite the lagoons, and in the adjacent industrial area. The chemical plant affected by the explosion covers an area of ​​10,000 square meters.
