In addition to other non-native mosquito species, the tiger mosquito also appeared in the headland of Baranya County this year. This was announced today by the National Virology Laboratory of the University of Pécs, headed by the János Szentágothai Research Center.

The institution draws attention to the fact that the establishment of non-indigenous mosquito species represents a serious risk throughout the continent.

Namely:

  • insects can introduce many viruses, not just tropical ones
  • adaptable and prolific
  • therefore, its continuous monitoring is of the utmost importance.

The problem (tiger mosquito) is not only (fly, buzz):

According to the National Virology Laboratory, in addition to Pécs, the Korean mosquito (Aedes koreicus) and the Japanese bush mosquito (Aedes japonicus) have recently appeared in various parts of Hungary.

The presence of the tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Pécs was confirmed by researchers using special traps and the most modern molecular biological methods.

As they wrote: In the case of Pécs, we can talk about the appearance of the species for the moment, it will also depend on the winter survival of the eggs laid this autumn, if it can settle and reproduce more in the city.

Researchers are conducting extensive genetic testing to determine where mosquitoes may have come from, and they continue to detect and test for pathogens.

Experts are also looking forward to the help of residents, since by eliminating intermittent bodies of water around the house, anyone can actively participate not only in curbing the reproduction of mosquitoes, but also in the discovery of new species.

A Mosquito alert With the help of a phone app called Mosquitoes, people can easily inform researchers if they have encountered a tiger mosquito, for example, or any other exotic species of mosquito.
