Vaccination of the population against the coronavirus will begin in Slovakia on Sunday, the Slovak public service news agency TASR reported on Tuesday, citing a statement from the Ministry of Health.
According to the Slovak ministry, the first 10,000 doses of the vaccine will arrive in the country on Saturday, of which employees of nursing homes and other health institutions and those who work in critical infrastructure will be vaccinated. Slovakia, which has five and a half million, has contracted the purchase of 18 million doses of vaccine, and 3.3 million people are expected to be vaccinated in the country, according to a strategy approved by the government last week.
The vaccines are scheduled to be delivered in four consecutive rounds: the first will be administered to healthcare workers and those working in critical infrastructure, the second to nursing home residents, the chronically ill and the sick over 65 , and the third to large populations. at risk of contagion, and finally in the fourth round the rest of the population over 18 years of age.
According to data released by the National Health Information Center on Tuesday, more than 13,000 PCR-type tests were carried out in Slovakia on Monday and 2,663 new infections were recorded. The number of new registered infections increased in mid-October and began to rise further in December, increasing to an average of more than 2,000 a day, up from an average of 3,000 last week.
Since the spring onset of the disease in the country, the presence of the coronavirus has been detected by PCR in some 155,000 people, and to date more than 1,325,000 viruses of this type have been tested. The number of those declared cured is just over 110,000. There are currently 2,538 infected people receiving treatment at the hospital. According to official reports, 1,618 deaths are attributed to the disease.
